How to Create a Gallery Wall: Layout Ideas and Tips

A gallery wall turns a collection of photos and prints into a real feature. It looks effortless when it's done well – and the secret is planning before you pick up a drill. Here's how to create one you'll love.

Pick a layout

  • Grid – matching frames in even rows and columns; neat, modern and calming.
  • Salon style – a mix of frame sizes arranged organically around a central piece; relaxed and full of character.
  • Row – a single line of frames at eye level; perfect for a hallway or up a staircase.

Choose your frames

For a calm, cohesive look, stick to one frame colour and finish. For a more eclectic feel, mix styles but keep one thing consistent – for example, all black frames in different sizes, or all wood tones.

Plan it on paper first

  1. Lay all your frames out on the floor and rearrange until you're happy.
  2. Cut paper templates the size of each frame and tape them to the wall to preview spacing.
  3. Keep a consistent gap – around 5–8 cm – between every frame.

Hang from the centre out

Start with the central piece at eye level (around 145–150 cm to the centre) and work outwards. A spirit level and a tape measure are all you need to keep everything straight.
