Choosing the right size picture frame is the difference between a photo that looks lost and one that looks just right. This guide walks you through the standard UK frame sizes, explains how a mount changes what you need, and shows you how to measure so you can order with confidence.
Standard UK frame sizes
Most frames sold in the UK come in two families of sizes: "A" paper sizes (used for posters, prints and certificates) and inch sizes (used for photographs).
A (paper) sizes
- A1 – 594 x 841 mm (23.4 x 33.1") – large posters and statement prints
- A2 – 420 x 594 mm (16.5 x 23.4") – posters and artwork
- A3 – 297 x 420 mm (11.7 x 16.5") – prints and small posters
- A4 – 210 x 297 mm (8.3 x 11.7") – certificates and standard prints
- A5 – 148 x 210 mm (5.8 x 8.3") – small prints
Inch (photo) sizes
- 6 x 4" – the classic photo print size
- 7 x 5" – a slightly larger photo
- 8 x 6" – popular for portraits
- 10 x 8" – a larger photo or small print
- 12 x 10" and above – enlargements and prints
With or without a mount?
A mount (the card border that sits between your picture and the frame) does two things: it makes your photo look more expensive, and it lets a smaller picture fit a larger frame. For example, a 10 x 8" frame with a mount typically holds a 7 x 5" or 8 x 6" photo. If you want your picture to fill the whole frame, choose a frame without a mount in your picture's exact size.
How to measure
Frame sizes always refer to the size of the picture the frame holds, not the outside of the frame. To work out what you need:
- Measure your photo or print (width x height).
- For a full, edge-to-edge look, pick that exact size with no mount.
- To add a border, choose the next size up with a mount cut to your picture size.
