How to Frame a Football Shirt or Sports Jersey

A framed shirt is a brilliant way to show off a treasured football, rugby or sports jersey – whether it's signed, a special edition or a memento of a big match. Here's how to frame one so it looks its best and stays protected.

Use a deep box frame

A shirt has bulk, so an ordinary flat frame won't do. A deep box frame gives the depth needed to mount the shirt without squashing it against the glazing, and creates a smart shadow-box effect.

Fold and position the shirt

  1. Decide how you want it displayed – fully spread, or folded to show the badge, name and number.
  2. Fold the arms behind the body for a classic look, or across the front for a more relaxed style.
  3. Use acid-free tissue behind folds to keep the shape and avoid hard creases.

Secure it without damage

Pin the shirt to the backing board using fine stainless steel pins through the seams where possible, so there are no visible marks. Avoid glue or anything permanent – you want the shirt to come out unharmed if you ever take it down.

Finishing touches

Add a small printed card with the player's name, the date or the match details to give your display context. Hang it out of direct sunlight, which can fade fabric over time.
